A constant advocate for change and awareness Long’s outpouring of concern for the community are evident, especially his work with youth. His belief that education is the key to solving the societal ills of poverty, drug abuse, and immorality has been widely documented. His actions attest to this belief. In 1993, New Birth Christian Academy, a private Christian school opened, with Long as its CEO. Numerous youth programs have also been established and outreach ministries that impact people around the world from the homeless, the incarcerated and those battling life threatening diseases. Bishop Long was honored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National HIV/AIDS Partnership (NHAP) for his outstanding and ongoing work in fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS.
A native of North Carolina, Bishop Eddie L. Long received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from North Carolina Central University and a Master’s of Divinity degree from Atlanta’s Interdenominational Theological Center. Additionally, Long received honorary doctorates from North Carolina Central University, Beulah Heights Bible College of Atlanta and Morehouse School of Religion. Bishop Long earned a doctoral Ph.D. in Pastoral Ministry from the International College of Excellence, an affiliate of Life Christian University in Tampa, Florida.
Bishop Long and his wife Vanessa are the proud parents of four children: Eric, Edward, Jared and Taylor. The couple has also served as surrogate parents for many other children in the church and community.
Both his business training and his spiritual training have been factors in the phenomenal successes he has achieved as a religious leader, though he is quick to point out that this success truly belongs to God.
